According to a letter sent to the Irvington High School football players and parents, the school is canceling the next football season because it has not been successful in hiring a permanent head coach for its Junior Varsity and Varsity Football programs. The school also says it only has 17-20 eligible players, not enough to safely field a Varsity team.
“I had no idea, I was completely stunned by that here we have an NCS school and we had a 3.3 grade point average for the team,” Jackson said. He says this news came after the team made it to the playoffs last year. At Wednesday’s graduation, Irvington High School seniors reacted to the team getting cut.
“I feel like a lot of the high school spirit and like, events, were football games, and like, we went to most of the home games supporting our friends, it was really fun. And like, I feel like this year, our team actually did really good, our team made it to the playoffs. We were all so proud of our team and after such successful season cutting it? I don’t think it’s a good idea,” said Reyansh Gangal, a student.
Irvington’s Varsity eligible players have been told they can transfer immediately to two schools within the district under a hardship waiver.
“They’re not sure exactly where to go. They don’t know where they’ll be able to go, they don't know where they’ll be accepted, because you know, there is a lot of rules of transfering and things of that nature, so to have these kids thrown into that, is kind of crazy,” he said.
“It’s really hard when you cancel the season, because it's just not that season, it's restarting the program from scratch,” he said. NBC Bay Area reached out to the Fremont Unified School District for a comment about the decision, but they said they were too busy with graduation to issue a statement or comment.
