The Internal Revenue Service may be in for a wave of changes in the incoming Trump administration with the nomination of a new commissioner.

Trump said on Wednesday he is nominating Billy Long, a former Republican House lawmaker who represented Missouri, to lead the IRS. He did not spend time on tax administration during his time in the House and wasn’t deeply involved in the negotiations of tax policy and does not have other experience that other recent IRS commissioners have had, raising several unknowns about what his vision for the agency will be.

Long will need to be confirmed by the Senate to take his post. Senate Finance Committee chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., called long a “bizarre choice” for the role and said that Werfel should serve out the remainder of his term as the IRS has shown improvements in customer service and collecting what is owed to the federal government.

Republicans have already pulled back $20 billion in IRA funding and are likely to seek to reverse more during the next Congress when the party will have complete control over Washington. Trump has not explicitly said he would go after the IRS funding, but some Republicans have already suggested it will be on the chopping block.
