Recent trash pickup issues affecting residents in Irondequoit were addressed during a public town board meeting Tuesday.
A residents speaks to members of the Irondequoit Town Board during a public hearing Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025 regarding ongoing garbage service issues in the town. Roughly 200 households had their garbage service canceled last month by Waste Management, according to Deputy Town Supervisor Peter Wehner, who said the town was never notified.
WM cited financial reasons and safety concerns including narrow roadways, resulting in 95 times more incidents than any other local route. Casella then picked up service for some of those customers, but the town said the company also quickly canceled service, saying it faced similar challenges. In a Facebook post from Nov. 19, Wehner said the town has brought in several companies to fill the service gap for these homes."I did not have a single week where pickup was done correctly for two months," said resident Justin Allen. "I called every week, granted it was resolved, but it was never once picked up, both the trash and recycling." Contracts with both companies were set to expire at the end of the year, but the town voted Tuesday to extend the contracts through February as it works to find a solution. "I will admit the cancellations of the contracts are what I would call a nuclear solution," Wehner said. "We know there is a limited number of issues, 174 to 200 issues, and we want to find out if there are more issues beyond those."According to the town's code, all private haulers must provide 100% of coverage to Irondequoit and cannot refuse service to certain neighborhoods.A Marion man received an indeterminate sentence Tuesday of 2 to 6 years in state prison in connection to a deadly crash last year, according to prosecutors. The Ontario County District Attorney’s Office is undergoing another leadership shift as Jason MacBride assumed the role of DA 2 weeks earlier than expected.Lyons, N.Y. — A former high school basketball coach in Wayne County avoided prison time after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sexual act.
