With schools closed and Easter approaching, Irish motorists are advised to plan fuel stops strategically to avoid high prices and queues. Fuel prices have increased due to global instability, and demand is expected to surge during the holiday weekend. Drivers are encouraged to compare prices and refuel before the Good Friday rush.

With schools closed and the Easter bank holiday weekend fast approaching, thousands of Irish drivers are gearing up to take to the roads for a much-needed getaway. However, there's one crucial detail motorists are being reminded to consider before setting off - when to refuel.

Drivers are being encouraged to plan strategically this week and steer clear of last-minute fill-ups, as petrol stations are bracing for a spike in demand ahead of Good Friday. Although roads might seem relatively calm early in the week, that's unlikely to continue. Traffic is expected to intensify dramatically as tens of thousands embark on staycations or journey to see relatives - and forecourts are likely to feel the pressure as well. Given that fuel costs remain elevated, choosing the right moment to fill up with petrol or diesel could prove significant. Since tensions escalated in the Middle East, fuel prices across Ireland have climbed sharply, with diesel frequently reaching €2 or more per litre. Motorists are thus being urged to compare prices and, where feasible, avoid refuelling during busy periods. A representative from the AA, Ireland's foremost motoring body, commented recently: 'With price differences of several cents per litre still common, shopping around can make a real difference over the course of a month', reports the Irish Mirror . 'Planning journeys, refuelling in advance rather than at motorway locations, and using fuel price comparison tools can all help motorists manage costs.' Despite the Government slashing 15c per litre off petrol and 20c off diesel, it seems many forecourts haven't yet passed on the full savings to motorists. Those keen to dodge lengthy queues are being urged to tank up ahead of the Easter rush on Good Friday, instead of waiting until the weekend when demand is expected to surge. RAC mobile servicing repairs team leader Sean Kimberlin commented: 'Fuel prices may have risen sharply in recent weeks, but our research with drivers shows they are still determined to make the most of the Easter break. 'This year we're expecting one of the busiest Easter getaways since 2022, with planned leisure trips rising again for the second year running.' Climbing fuel prices are being fuelled by continued global instability, especially heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz - a critical passage handling roughly a fifth of the planet's oil supply. In related news, the Fuel Allowance has been prolonged for an additional four weeks, now running through to May 1. Want to see more of the stories you love from RSVP ?
