An instant classic: Notre Dame rallied from two touchdowns down against South Carolina in the highest-scoring game in the 78-year history of the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.
The big plays started early and kept coming. Rattler threw a 17-yard TD pass to Xavier Legette to open the scoring on the Gamecocks' first possession. Notre Dame countered with Buchner's nifty 15-yard TD run.On a fourth-and-eight play from the Irish 23, the Gamecocks lined up within a deep shotgun formation. He threw a TD pass to Hunter Rogers, who lined up on the right as the second receiver in a two-player stack.
After Notre Dame's Blake Grupke and South Carolina's Mitch Jeter swapped field goals for a 24-10 margin, the Irish came fighting back. Buchner then scored his second TD of the game on an 11-yard run on Notre Dame's first possession of the third quarter to tie the game 24-24. The Gamecocks countered with Rattlers' 42-yard TD to Xavier Legette.
Notre Dame then gave South Carolina coach Shane Beamer a taste of his own trick-play medicine when a fake punt resulted in a 20-yard gain for Lenzy to the Gamecocks' 47. Lenzy lined up left, went in motion and took a shovel pass from upback Davis Sherwood, who had taken the snap.
