Pilgrims defy govt's movement restrictions to commemorate the death anniversary Imam Musa al-Kadhim. FMTNews Covid19
BAGHDAD: Stealing around barbed-wire barriers through fields and side streets, dozens of black-clad Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad defied curfews and coronavirus this week to visit the shrine of a revered imam.
But the government’s social distancing efforts are facing a hurdle, as pilgrims defy restrictions to commemorate the anniversary of the death of revered Shiite Imam Musa al-Kadhim. Top cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani has urged Iraqis not to gather in large numbers for prayers, where risk of infection could be high, and declared the fight against the novel coronavirus a “sacred duty”.
