Biden and Al-Sudani have yet to meet since Al-Sudani took office last year after being appointed by a coalition of parties, predominantly Shiite Muslim groups close to Tehran. Iraq has been a close partner of the US since Washington’s 2003 invasion and both sides say they are trying to broaden their relationship from a near-singular focus on defence and counter-terrorism towards economic cooperation.
