Airstrike in Baghdad kills powerful Iranian military leader Soleimani, according to Iraqi TV
Deirdre ShesgreenA powerful Iranian military leader, Gen. Qassim Soleimani, was killed Thursday night in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport, according to Iraqi TV.
Soleimani is an extremely influential figure inside Iran, heading Iran's elite Quds Force, part of the country's hard-line paramilitary Revolutionary Guard Corps. His death, if confirmed, would be a seismic event in the Middle East. The Associated Press reported that Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of an Iran-backed militia organization known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, was also killed in the attack.
