An Iranian lawmaker has publicly vowed to assassinate President Donald Trump, escalating tensions between the two countries. Zarei stated, “If an opportunity arises, I will punish you personally! For my part, I’d say that whenever I get the opportunity, I will not hesitate for a moment to kill you, and mind you, I am a political official who speaks this diplomatically. The masses of Iranians are waiting for an opportunity to send the murderer and the mastermind of the assassination of the world’s greatest anti-terrorist figure, Haj Qassem, to hell in a glorious manner and worthy of his legacy, God willing!” He further asserted that as a member of the Parliament’s National Security Committee, he believes the case of Haj Qassem Soleimani’s retribution will never be forgotten and remains on the agenda. Zarei also referenced previous assassination attempts on Trump, stating that the American people alone are enough to kill him and that American freedom fighters are waiting for their turn. He called Trump an “idiot” and insisted that the civilized duty of Iranians is to retaliate against criminals and terrorists.Ali Safavi, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), condemned Zarei’s comments, urging the international community to abandon its policy of appeasement towards the Iranian regime. He argued that these remarks are consistent with the inherent nature of the Iranian theocracy, citing a history of terrorism and human rights abuses. Safavi appealed for support for the Iranian people and the Resistance Units in their fight against the IRGC and the current regime. Meanwhile, Jason Brodsky, policy director for the U.S. advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran, called for Zarei to be sanctioned. This incident comes amidst heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. following the death of former IRGC Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in a 2020 U.S. airstrike.
