CARACAS/DUBAI - The first of five Iranian tankers carrying fuel for gasoline-starved Venezuela approached the South American country's waters on Saturday afternoon, despite a US official's warning that Washington was considering a response to the shipment.
The nation's defence minister had pledged that the military would escort the tankers once they reached Venezuela's exclusive economic zone due to what authorities described as threats from the United States. The shipments, desperately needed as gasoline is increasingly scarce in Venezuela, have caused a diplomatic standoff between the United States and Iran and Venezuela as both countries are under US sanctions.
