Iran’s supreme leader has opened the door to renewed negotiations with the United States over his country’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, telling its civilian government there was “no barrier” to engaging with its “enemy.

In this photo released by the official website of the office of the Iran ian supreme leader, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks after giving his official seal of approval to newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian in an endorsement ceremony in Tehran , Iran , Sunday, July 28, 2024. Khamenei urged Pezeshkian to prioritize neighbors, African and Asian nations as well as countries that have “supported and helped” Iran in Tehran ’s foreign relations policies.

But his comments mirror those around the time of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which saw Tehran’s nuclear program greatly curtailed in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
