Iranian state TV had reported that Giles Whitaker, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Tehran, was among several foreigners detained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards
The Foreign Office has denied Iranian claims that Britain's second-most senior envoy in the country has been arrested.
Iranian state TV had reported that Giles Whitaker, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Tehran, was among several foreigners detained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards for alleged acts of spying. A report said:"These spies were taking earth samples in Iran's central desert where the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace missile exercises were conducted."
Iran's Fars news agency had reported that Mr Whitaker, who was an army officer before a long career with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, would be deported after apologising. But in a statement provided to Sky News, the Foreign Office said:"Reports of the arrest of a British diplomat in Iran are completely false."Iranian TV had claimed the husband of Austria's cultural attaché in the country and a Polish university professor were also arrested.
