The U.S. and Israel have launched a joint attack on Iran, officials say.
President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. military began "major combat operations in Iran," in a video posted to social media. In his address, Trump said: "Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard, terrible people.
" Trump called Iran the "world's number one state sponsor of terror," and said that that they can "never have a nuclear weapon." At the end of his message, President Donald Trump called on the Iranian people to seize this opportunity for regime change. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his first remarks on the strikes said in a statement that Israel and the U.S. "embarked on an operation to remove the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran."President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. military began "major combat operations in Iran," in a video posted to social media.Bahrain's state-run news agency said that the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet's service center was targeted in a missile attack Saturday.The joint Israeli-U.S. strike on Iran "included an attack on dozens of military targets and was carried out as part of a broad, coordinated, and joint attack against the regime," a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement."In the months leading up to the attack, close joint planning was carried out between the IDF and the US Army, which enabled the broad attack to be carried out with maximum synchronization and coordination between the armies," the IDF statement said. "The IDF, across all its systems, has a rigorous and long-term preparation process for the operation, both in the defense systems and in the various attack plans."The Iranian Ministry of Interior condemned the joint attack by U.S. and Israel on Saturday, saying in a statement released through Iran's state broadcaster IRIB: "We would like to inform the great people of Islamic Iran that the criminal enemy has once again violated all international laws and during negotiations, once again violated our beloved homeland." Earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement via Iranian state broadcaster IRIB saying an attack on Israel had begun. "In response to the aggression of the hostile and criminal enemy against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the first wave of widespread missile and drone attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the occupied territories has begun," the IRGC said.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his first remarks on the strikes said in a statement that Israel and the U.S. "embarked on an operation to remove the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran." Calling it Operation "The Roar of the Lion," Netanyahu thanked President Donald Trump "for his historic leadership."
