Sports minister Ahmad Donyamali said Iran's soccer team cannot compete in the World Cup scheduled to take place in the U.S., Canada and Mexico this summer
Iran cannot compete in the World Cup set to take place in the U.S., Canada and Mexico this summer in the wake of the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the nation's sports minister has said. "Considering that this corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup," Ahmad Donyamali told state television on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
The World Cup is set to take place from June 11 to July 19, with Iran drawn in a group alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt. They are scheduled to play two fixtures in Inglewood's SoFi stadium and another at Lumen Field, Seattle. But the soccer team's participation had been in doubt after U.S-Israeli strikes were launched against the Iranian regime at the end of February.
