What are the differences between the iPhone 15 Pro and the regular iPhone 15 models? And should you spend more to get the Pro version? We compare the performance, the camera quality, battery life and more...

Both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 come with a 6.1-inch screen size, which makes these phones quite compact in comparison to the Pro Maxes and Ultra phones of the world. But while the screen sizes are the same on the two, the actual physical size of the phones is expected to differ slightly since the 15 Pro has slimmer bezels and this helps make it a tiny bit narrower.

But probably the most noticeable difference will remain the heavier weight of the 15 Pro compared to the vanilla model. In terms of materials, the 15 Pro is said to get a new titanium frame, a change from the stainless steel that Apple has been using on previous Pro models, This titanium finish is more damage resistant, plus it weighs considerably less than stainless steel . The regular iPhone 15 model, on the other hand, will use the familiar aluminum frame. Another difference is that the back glass on the Pro model should have a frosted finish, while the regular iPhone 15 will have a glossy glass back. The iPhone 15 Pro will also get a new Action Button in place of the mute switch. This new button will be programmable so you can set it to do whatever you like, including still acting as a mute button. The iPhone 15 is expected to stick with the mute switch. On the bottom, both phones will have a USB-C port, a change from the Lightning port that Apple has been using for years. That's good news as this is the same cable most other electronics use as well. When it comes to the screens, both use a 6.1" OLED panel and we don't expect to see any significant difference in the color balance and overall quality of the image. What will be different is that the Pro model has 120Hz ProMotion, a feature that the vanilla iPhone 15 will not get. The ProMotion screen means you get buttery scrolling and swiping, and when not in use, the screen drops to just 1Hz sipping less battery. We do expect the iPhone 15 Pro to also hit higher peak brightness levels which helps see the screen easier outdoors on a sunny day, but that's about it on the screen differences. Both phones are said to come with the Dynamic Island which Apple introduced in 2022.Performance and SoftwareThe iPhone 15 Pro will have the new A17 Bionic chip, which is a massive leap forward, making the jump to the cutting edge 3nm technology which allows fitting more transistors and squeezing more power and better efficiency out of the same die size. The regular iPhone 15, on the other hand, will be powered by the A16 Bionic chip from last year's iPhone 15 Pro. Is the new A17 Bionic chip alone a reason for upgrade? Probably not as both those chips are plenty fast, but if it helps the 15 Pro get considerably longer battery life, that might be a good reason. The 15 Pro also jumps to 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 comes with 6GB. This should help the Pro model with multitasking. We will be updating this section with more details about the performance difference between these two chips soon, so stay tuned for that. In terms of software there is practically zero difference between the 15 Pro and the 15. Both are expected to run on the latest iOS 17 when the time comes for the September launch. Appel has the best software update policy in the industry, and both these phones are expected to be updated for the next five or even six years. Finally, for connectivity there is no difference between these two as both support 5G bands and both have the cool new Emergency SOS via satellite feature, which might just be a lifesaver in areas with no cellular coverage.Camera aficionados know that one of the bigger reasons to choose to get the 15 Pro over the vanilla 15 model is that 3X zoom camera which gives it more zoom versatility and helps with portrait mode shots. The regular iPhone 15 this year, however, is getting a big upgrade with a 48-megapixel main camera sensor, which is good news. Let's see if it supports ProRAW, a feature previously reserved for the Pro models. Speaking of the Pro version, it made the jump to that higher res 48-megapixel sensor last year, but this year, it is expected to use an even larger sized 48MP sensor for improvements in low light photography. Some rumors also claims we might see 8K video recording capabilities for the first time on the 15 Pro, but do take this with the proverbial grain of salt. With a main, bottom-firing speaker and a helper speaker in the earpiece, Apple has achieved parity in the sound quality department and we don't expect the 15 Pro to have better loudspeaker quality than the regular iPhone 15. Neither of these has a headphone jack, as expected, and let us also remind you that you can use the new USB-C port to connect wired headphones. No differences in the haptics department too. Both phones come with the Taptic Engine that Apple has been using for years and it has been excellent all those years. The big question remains whether the iPhone 15 Pro will actually get longer battery life than the vanilla iPhone 15 model. We don't have the answer yet, but chances are that both these phones will come with a roughly 3,200mAh battery size, with possibly a slightly larger cell size on the regular iPhone 15, but we are talking about a 2% to 3% difference. The game-changer here could be the new A17 Bionic chip. The more efficient 3nm process should help it consume far less energy, at least that's the hope. In terms of charging, first, don't expect Apple to give you a charger in the box with either of these phones, so you'd have to buy one separately. Still, you will likely get a USB-C cable, but we don't expect actual charging speeds to change with the transition to USB-C. If that's indeed the case as we predict, we'd have 23W wired charging speeds on the 15 Pro and 20W speeds on the 15, not a meaningful difference. And here is an overview of the specs differences between the Pro and non-Pro models:
