Should you upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro from the iPhone 13 Pro? We compare the differences exploring the impact of the new A17 Bionic chip, the improved design, the new camera system and we compare the battery life of the two...

Similar 6.1" size, but new titanium frame and slimmer bezels on the 15 Pro The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro have a roughly similar, but they are not quite identical so cases from the 13 Pro will not fit the newer 15 Pro.

The newer model is a hair less wide and it also has a much bigger camera system. The 15 Pro also switches to titanium for the mid-frame, a change from the stainless steel that is used on the 13 Pro. That titanium comes with a brushed finish and is not as glossy and not such a fingerprint magnet as the shiny stainless steel rails on the 13 Pro. One important side benefit of using titanium is that it is a lighter material, so we expect the 15 Pro to weigh less than the 13 Pro. The 15 Pro is also anticipated to introduce a brand new Action Button, which replaces the Mute Switch that Apple uses on the 13 Pro, and has used ever since the very beginning. This Action Button is said to be programmable, so you can set it to act as a mute switch, but also as anything else you desire. The 15 Pro has the same physical power and volume keys as the 13 Pro. On the bottom, however, you will notice the newer model goes with the USB-C port, the same one as your other gadgets, while the 13 Pro uses the older Apple Lightning connector. In terms of colors, both models feature a matte glass back with a black, a silver and a gold option on both of them, but you are expected to get a new Deep Red color on the 15 Pro, while the 13 Pro has a very cool Sierra Blue version. You get the same 6.1-inch screen size on the 15 Pro and the 13 Pro, but the newer model comes with very thin borders around that screen for a very elegant look, while the 13 Pro has chunkier screen borders.Apart from that, the 15 Pro is expected to go brighter, which is useful on a bright sunny day, but in terms of color accuracy, we don't expect to see any major changes, and both phones support common HDR standards.Performance and SoftwareThe iPhone 15 Pro is two generations ahead of the 13 Pro when it comes to the processor, and it's this latest upgrade that counts the most as the Apple A17 Bionic chip uses 3nm manufacturing technology. This cutting-edge process allows Apple to cram more transistors in the same space, which results in faster performance and notable power efficiency improvements. The iPhone 15 Pro also jumps to 8GB of RAM, up from 6GB on the 13 Pro. This should help keep more apps open in the background and you will get a better multitasking experience because of that. The great thing about iPhones is that they get updated for 5 or 6 years, so the iPhone 13 Pro still has quite a few years of software support left and yes, both phones will run the very same iOS 17 version once it is released in mid September. Both also have 5G connectivity support, but one new feature only available on the 15 Pro is satellite connectivity, which allows you to send an emergency SOS message in places where you have no cell phone coverage. That's definitely a welcome feature. We should also mention that the iPhone 15 Pro is eSIM only in the United States, so you can't just pop in a physical SIM card like you can on the 13 Pro. International models of the 15 Pro might still support a physical SIM slot, though. The iPhone 15 Pro has this impressively large camera system on its back, they just seem to grow every year, and the iPhone 13 Pro while it also has three cameras on its back, they are not quite as large. The main reason for that increase is that Apple is using larger camera sensors. For cameras, the rule of the thumb is to not look at the megapixel count that can be misleading, but instead look at the sensor size, which is usually a good indication of the quality of a camera. So the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to come with a new and extra-large 48MP main camera sensor, and then a 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter as well as a 12MP 3X zoom lens. The 13 Pro, on the other hand, uses a 12MP main camera sensor. The change in quality can be noticed on all three cameras thanks to both the new hardware and the software, but the biggest change has got to be in the ability to shoot 48-megapixel high resolution pictures with the iPhone 15 Pro. These images have a ton more detail compared to your 12-megapixel shots from the 13 Pro. The 15 Pro also comes with a new 2X sensor crop which gives you better quality than the simple 2X digital zoom of the 13 Pro. The new model is also more versatile for portrait mode shots. The iPhone 13 Pro only allows you to shoot portraits at 1X and 3X zoom, while the 15 Pro can do 1X, 2X and 3X portraits. All of those improvements also make their way to video quality as the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to deliver improvements in the clarity of recording, especially those in low light. Rumors also claim we might see a new 8K video option on the 15 Pro, but we are not yet certain that is happening. Both these iPhones come with a dual loudspeaker setup with a main, bottom-firing speaker and a secondary one embedded in the earpiece at the top. The 13 Pro was a big leap in audio quality over previous generations, but since then, it seems that audio quality has remained mostly the same and we don't anticipate any huge leaps in audio quality on the 15 Pro. Some small tweaks and improvements, however, are certainly possible. These two models rely on the same Taptic Engine for your haptics. This vibration motor is industry leading and provides excellent feedback, but if you want to compare the quality of the haptics, well... don't expect much in terms of a difference.Expect slight improvements in battery life, no big change in charging speeds The iPhone 13 Pro delivered very impressive battery life for its size, so the iPhone 15 Pro has big shoes to fill. While we have no leaked information about that, we expect the new iPhone 15 Pro to have a roughly 3,200mAh battery capacity, while the iPhone 13 Pro has a 3,095mAh battery, a small difference of around 3%. However, it's the new more power efficient A17 chip that might make a bigger contribution to battery life, and we are optimistic that we might finally get longer battery life in the 15 Pro. Just don't have your expectations too high: after all, that's still a compact phone and it probably won't last more than a full day on a single charge. Speaking of charging, you won't find a charger in the box with either one, but you will find different ports on each phone and also different cables that come in the box. The iPhone 15 Pro makes the move to USB-C which is everywhere, while the iPhone 13 Pro uses the older Lightning connector. Charging speeds, however, are not expected to change much and these iPhones will still charge slowly than most other phones on the market. We expect the same 23W charging speeds on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro. A full wired charge takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes on both phones. Both also have MagSafe, Apple's clever wireless charging standard, which tops up the phones at 15W speeds, so a full charge using MagSafe takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes on both phones.Take a look at this breakdown of the specs of the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro:
