Donnie Yen will return for Ip Man 5, but besides Ip Man's death in Ip Man 4: The Finale, there is a much bigger challenge for the sequel to tackle.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Donnie Yen will return as Bruce Lee's kung fu mentor in Ip Man 5, but the movie has a bigger challenge to overcome than his death at the end of Ip Man 4: The Finale. Donnie Yen's portrayal of famed Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man stands as his signature role, with the Ip Man movie franchise chronicling its title character's life story, albeit in a fictionalized form.
While Donnie Yen had previously declared his Ip Man retirement at various points in the series only to subsequently return to the role, Ip Man 5 is nonetheless a surprise for martial arts fans that is as welcome as it is unexpected after Ip Man 4's ending. However, the death of Ip Man is not the biggest challenge that Ip Man 5 will face as a continuation of the Ip Man martial arts movie series. The real test will be how Ip Man 5 handles the biggest theme at play in Ip Man 4: The Finale.
All Ip Man 5 needs to do to fit into the Ip Man franchise is simply take place before Ip Man's passing. Ip Man 5 can even give itself some extra room by establishing a time jump of a year or two between the ending of Ip Man 4: The Finale's main story and the main character's death. However, even taking these measures, Ip Man 5 still has a larger, more philosophical challenge to work with that's based on the kind of movie that Ip Man 4: The Finale is.
Additionally, Ip Man 4: The Finale also features Bruce Lee prominently. The movie shows Lee at the stage of his life where he has advanced well beyond Ip Man's tutelage to become a martial arts pioneer himself, beginning to develop his Jeet Kune Do. In all, Ip Man 4: The Finale really goes out of its way to position itself as Ip Man's final story with Lee passing on his wisdom to future generations and Ip Man mentoring his son, Ip Ching.
However, Ip Man is too much of a Wing Chun warrior to let that keep him down, even as his death nears. Ip Man 5 could tell the Ip Man franchise's most heartfelt story, with Ip Man training Ip Ching in Wing Chun and doing everything possible to live the rest of his life to its fullest.
