A thinly veiled preview of the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq6 N shows the future of the N performance sub-brand.
Hyundai has been very clear its future N-brand high-performance cars will be powered by electric motors and it's showcasing a thinly disguised future model today in the Hyundai RN22e concept, better known as the upcomingWith the full unveiling of the Ioniq 6 yesterday and the announcement of the upcoming Ioniq 5 N today, Hyundai is going full-tilt into the electric future. Critically, unlike the RM20e concept from two years ago, the RN22e isn't a hacked together project car.
The battery might be the same, but the motors ain't. Hyundai hasn't shared specific details on what all's been changed, but the RN22e makes 576 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque combined from its front and rear electric motors. All that power gives it a top speed of more than 155 mph. With half-again as much power as the most-powerful Ioniq 6, we predict Hyundai will be able to drop the RN22e's 0 to 60 mph time from 5.
Otherwise, stopping is handled by new 15.7-inch front brakes clamped by four-piston monoblock calipers sized to stand up to an EV's prodigious weight. The concept also features significantly enhanced cooling to keep both the battery and motors at their optimal temperatures during track driving and prevent the car from pulling power and going into a limp mode. The new bodywork is designed to improve both cooling and downforce.
The concept features manually adjustable dampers and ride height, which will likely translate to electronically adjustable dampers on the production car. Inside, N is sticking to its conviction that performance EVs need to make noise. Called N Sound+, it's projected from both internal and external speakers. On the previous RM20e concept, it sounded like a sci-fi V-8, but Hyundai is still experimenting with different sounds.
While the Ioniq 5 N will be the first N version of a Hyundai EV, the RN22e previews the next model in the pipeline, the Ioniq 6 N. It also gives us a good idea what kind of performance the Ioniq 5 N will be packing. Timing on a production Ioniq 6 N is unclear at this point, but with the Ioniq 5 N not coming until next year, we'd bet the next car is more than a year out, possibly two. Regardless, high-performance EVs at a less expensive price point are happening, and they're coming soon.
