International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates says the war in Gaza does not warrant the same Olympic sanctions for Israel as those imposed on Russia after it invaded Ukraine.

International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates says the war in Gaza does not warrant the same Olympic sanctions for Israel as those imposed on Russia after it invaded Ukraine, due to differences between the two conflicts.

The IOC initially urged sporting organisations to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus due to the violation of the Olympic Truce, which is a non-binding UN resolution designed to allow athletes to travel safely to the Games, and lasts about two months around the Olympic and Paralympics.

In a failed appeal against their ban, Russia said the IOC were showing double-standards and “bias” by not sanctioning Israel. Coates said the IOC executive committee did not view Israel’s actions as comparable with those of Russia.“The sanctions on Russia were only in respect to them annexing some parts of the sovereign territory of Ukraine, in four regions. So we have to recognise the sovereignty there. The IOC executive board suspended Russia over that,” he said.

Asked why the IOC agreed to the Parisian plan for the riskier open-air ceremony, Coates said: “This is all about taking the Games to the public. We are very open to something to new, we were very open to the idea. Yes, it makes the security more difficult, but security at Sydney Olympic Park was pretty difficult too.”
