Invincible's title gag was one of its most prominent running jokes in season 1, but season 2 has flipped it to make it even more funny and impactful.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary A recurring Invincible gag has become even more hilarious in season 2 by flipping expectations to nail its reveal. One of the longest ongoing jokes from the show's first season was the title card disrupting characters saying the name, "Invincible." Rather than getting the name out, the title card would abruptly cut them off with the show and the character's name appearing in big yellow writing.
It could have easily run its course and lost its humor, but the way the show managed to refresh things in Invincible season 2 made the payoff worth it. The new season has a lot to live up to after finding so much success in Invincible season 1's story, and the long gap between installments could have made this difficult. Not only has the show managed to pick up where it left off and continue its form, but even the minor jokes such as the title gag have been worked in seamlessly.
The title card doesn't make its appearance until the very end of the episode, less than a minute before the credit's role. When it does finally come, it cuts off Angstrom Levy, Invincible season 2's main villain. After all the opportunities that passed throughout the episode, it feels like the gag will never come, only to be pulled out at the last minute. All the fakeouts throughout the episode really add to the delivery, which is pulled off masterfully.
Invincible Season 2 Episode 1's Title Gag Makes The Joke Way Darker While the increasing blood seemed slightly sinister, Invincible season 2, episode 1's title gag adds an element of darkness to the joke. Rather than simply being a way to slam the title card on screen, it seems to play a more narrative-focused role. When Angstrom is cut off, the text reading "Invincible" shows up before cracking.
A crack replacing the blood could reference more of a mental battle this season for Mark, rather than a physical one. In season 1, he had many fights which he ended up injured but kept on fighting. This time around, Mark seems much more mentally exhausted, and a villain with a more personal agenda could have Invincible crack instead of leaving him bruised and bloodied.
