In ‘Twice Colonized,’ which recently premiered at Sundance, the 63-year-old activist provides an insight into her lifetime at the forefront of the fight for Inuit rights.

Now I am in the process of decolonizing twice. So the next journey is about how I go back to my values, beliefs, and way of being in this world.

Since Peter was called to the bar in 2007, she has defended the human rights of Indigenous peoples of the Arctic and campaigned to bring her colonizers in both Canada and Denmark to justice. Born in Arkisserniaq, a village in the north of Kalaallit Nunaat—otherwise known as Greenland—she has lived in Nunangat for more than four decades and is a formidable guardian of her ancestral homelands. “I grew up like we were born into straight jackets,” Peter says in.

At the age of 11, the academically brilliant Peter was sent by her parents to attend high school and live alone in Denmark. “My whole world changed instantly,” she recalls in. “When you try to whiten-ize little Inuit, you separate them from their parents, from their peers.… Every time it was a new family, new school.… I don’t have any childhood memories of one place, I was always just getting adjusted.
