While some motorists will have to hold on to their cars for longer, others will consider a downgrade. The Suzuki S-Presso is a shot of caffeine for a hungover budget.
to an econobox to help keep the wolf from the door. But downgrade to what if the car you paid R400 000 for is now worth R200 000?Suzuki has an answer in the brand-new. The range is priced from R134 900 to R160 900, making it the country’s most affordable car by far.
Suzuki classifies the S-Presso as an ultracompact SUV because of its high, upright stance and significant ground clearance – the distance between its belly and the road. Though it might be compact for an SUV, it’s roomy inside for a small hatchback and four large adults will fit into it. The boot, at 239 litres, is spacious for a car in this class and there’s a full-size spare wheel under the boot floor.
Power comes from a fuel-efficient 1.0 litre petrol engine that doesn’t struggle to haul the S-Presso around, thanks to the car’s low weight.Suzuki didn’t skimp on equipment. Even the R135 900 S-Presso GL comes with two air bags, rear parking sensors, electric front windows, ABS, air conditioning and remote central locking. The central locking doesn’t unlock the rear hatch though.
What you might miss are an adjustable steering column and a height-adjustable seat – if you’re tall. I’m 1.96m tall and my head was against the ceiling, something which rarely happens in other inexpensive cars. The steering wheel is a bit too close to the dashboard, which made me feel as if I wasn’t fully in control.
To sweeten the deal, all S-Pressos come with one year’s complimentary insurance and the first two services are free. The S-Presso also has a five-year/200 000km warranty that includes roadside assistance for three years.
