San Pedro Playhouse added an intimacy director to its crew to help actors with romantic scenes, emotionally challenging material.
Sometimes, actor Sami Serrano is OK after rehearsing the scene in which Anita , the character she plays in “ West Side Story ,” is menaced and taunted with racist invective. Sometimes she’s not. “That’s the last thing I have on stage, so that being the last thing, it’s really hard to shake it off the rest of the night,” Serrano said. So it’s been hugely helpful for her to work with intimacy director Liz Fisher , who is part of the production team for the San Pedro Playhouse production.
It’s the first time he’s worked with an intimacy director. That's the case for many of the actors, too. This is the first time Jillian Juliet Sainz, who plays Maria, has worked so closely with one. Fisher helped Sainz and Nick DeGraw Glavec, who plays Maria’s beloved Tony, choreograph their kissing scenes and other moments when they touch. “I’ve never done anything like that before,” Glavec said.
