player ready... First responders revised their estimate for a fire that closed Interstate 70 in Garfield County down to eight to 10 acres, but said rocky terrain and high winds make fighting it a challenge.
The highway is closed in both directions at mile marker 112 in South Canyon, with no estimated reopening time.a brush fire, now called the Paradise fire, started near the westbound lanes. Both lanes had closed by 3:15 p.m., and remained shut as of 5 p.m. while crews worked to contain the fire. Shortly after 4 p.m., the department announced the fire had reached 20 acres, and said it was calling in helicopters and airplanes to assist with the fight.
At 4:40 p.m., it revised the estimate down and said planes wouldn’t be able to help safely because of high winds. At that time, about 44 firefighters were working to knock down flames in the canyon’s steep and rocky terrain, the department said in a Facebook post. Police didn’t share any information about how the fire might have started.
They said multiple agencies were assisting with the response, including the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, Colorado River Fire Rescue, Garfield County Emergency Communications Authority, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Department of Transportation.
