International Women’s Day C0uld Be Your Day, Too

And today is March 8th, International Women’s Day, right? But not exclusively. There are over a dozen other commemorative claims on this day and this month, just shy of one for each day of March.

Further, how much of the impetus to create these commemorative days and/or months is altruistic and how much just bald-faced marketing to sell more whatever. Likely it is both, the degrees to which it is one or the other may depend in large part upon the type of entity presenting the commemorative push — nonprofit vs. for profit, service vs. commerce. Nonetheless, all marketing exists to, a handy catchall phrase for the umbrella motivation behind this commemorative calendar phenomenon.

So what? Why bother to take note? I am conflicted about this: am I pleased or skeptical about having a Women’s Month? Or November being National Epilepsy Month? What is truly getting accomplished? In such a crowded calendar is it really possible to create an effect, let alone the desired effect? Whether primarily for commercial gain or cause-related awareness raising, are commemorative dates an effective...

It seems there can be anything-you-want month/day/year. So who is the governing entity or entities here? Are there any? Who decided to proclaim March 8 International Women’s Day? Or March 20th World Frog Day?In the U.S. there are federally approved and legislated designations, presidential proclamations and such for nationally and officially recognized commemorative dates . However, there appears to be none to little vetting of the creation of other commemorative days.
