In 2019, women were found to earn 82 percent of what men earn nationally. In a study that included women over the age of 16 in the Houston, The Woodlands and Sugar Land area, women earned 81 percent of what men their age earned,Out of 250 metropolitan areas, 122 areas had a higher percentage of women who earned closer to men than the greater Houston area, the research found.

The research found that the gap increases as women get older. For women aged 50 and above, the gap increases to 71 percent, compared to 84 percent for women ages 30-49, and 95 percent for women ages 16-29. that looks at full-time workers' income. They found the gender pay gap exists for reasons including half of U.S. adults finding that they are treated differently by employers. Less women responded to the survey that they tend to make different choices about balancing work and family, and even fewer said it was because women tend to work in jobs that pay less than men.
