International Paper is closing one of its plants on San Antonio's East Side. The future of the other facility is unclear.

Global packaging and pulp producer International Paper is closing one of its San Antonio plants and issuing pink slips to 89 workers. The Memphis -based company told the Texas Workforce Commission it is shuttering its plant at 610 Pop Gunn St. on the city’s East Side in mid-November.

The status of that facility was unclear Wednesday. The company did not immediately respond to an inquiry Wednesday afternoon about why it is closing the Pop Gunn plant and whether the AT&T Center Parkway plant will remain operational. International Paper is laying off about 650 employees company-wide, including 400 in Memphis, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported. The company employs about 39,000 people globally. In 2012, the company shut down a cardboard production plant at 3323 E.
