In a news release, Interim Seattle Police Department (SPD) Chief Sue Rahr said she needed to make a few leadership changes to keep operations running smoothly.
Interim Seattle Police Department Chief Sue Rahr announced significant changes to staff leadership Friday., Rahr said she did not have a date for when Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell would announce his choice for a new police chief, but in the meantime, she needed to make a few leadership changes to keep operations running smoothly until the new chief is on board.
Deputy Chief Eric Barden will retire after serving Seattle for 38 years. He will be away from SPD headquarters starting Monday, Dec. 16 while he deals with his mother’s serious health condition.This week, Rahr will appoint SPD Assistant Chief Yvonne Underwood to be the department’s acting deputy chief.
“She has the knowledge and experience necessary to step in and maintain the multi-faceted patrol and investigative operations across the organization,” Rahr said. Once Underwood has a replacement, Rahr will appoint Captain Lori Aagard to be the acting assistant chief over professional standards. Rahr said she expects Aagard to be in the position by the end of the year.“Lori has done an outstanding job leading the North Precinct, and I know she will be missed by the staff at the precinct, the community, and the city council members she has worked with so effectively,” Rahr said.
Rahr said Underwood and Aagard had impressed her, and as rebuilding trust within the department has been her most important priority, she believed they would make that happen.
