'I was branded a 'paedophile' for 'trying to talk about sexuality in school'.'
Connor McManus, named ‘Young Councillor of the Year’ in 2022, has detailed the ‘disgusting’ abuse he has faced as an openly gay official
‘They’d been working really hard to get an accreditation from LGBT Scotland about inclusivity and treating each other fairly,’ the councillor said. The school switched off the comment section after McManus became worried children may see what the anti-LGBTQ+ users had been saying.‘If it was just me, then sure – I’ve put myself in the public eye – but it was the kids as well,’ he said.
‘Growing up, I thought that I’d be able to hold my boyfriend’s hand while walking down the street someday – but that doesn’t seem to be the reality anymore,’ McManus said.‘I like to have a private life, but that gets taken away, because now when I hold my partner’s hand, it becomes a political statement.
‘I think that’s so sad. The public could be benefitting from such a range of diverse people with so many different perspectives but they won’t come forward because they’ll be attacked as a person and not for what they stand for.’show that the number of homophobic and biphobic hate crimes has increased year on year since 2014, from 16% to 33% in 2022-23.
