North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing his teenage daughter to lead the nuclear-armed state after his death, according to South Korean MPs briefed by Seoul's spy agency.
"Pyongyang is teaching Kim Ju Ae to be heir apparent, indicating she's the most likely successor," she told reporters after a briefing from the intelligence agency. The NIS also told parliamentarians that Mr Kim was now "heavily overweight" at "around 140kg", putting him at "high risk of heart-related illness".
Mr Kim was said to have shown symptoms of high blood pressure and diabetes in his early 30s, Ms Lee said, quoting the NIS. The NIS told South Korean politicians more than half of her outings with her father were related to military activity, such as overseeing drills. Kim Jong Un has taken his daughter Kim Ju Ae to an increasing number of public events in recent years. However, the NIS has not ruled out the possibility that another sibling could emerge as a potential alternative in the succession plan, Mr Park said, given North Korea had not made an official succession announcement. It is believed Mr Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju have three children — two girls and a son — although their existence has never been officially confirmed by North Korea.
Heavy rainfall on Saturday had caused a river on the North Korean-Chinese border to exceed a dangerous level, creating "a grave crisis", the official Korean Central News Agency said.About 10 military helicopters and navy and government boats were mobilised for the evacuation efforts in Sinuiju city and Uiju town where flooding had isolated residents.
