Over the years, I interacted with Pat on many occasions. The more I dealt with him, the more I realized how brilliant he was as an engineer and also how well he managed and motivated people.
But to be fair, Intel had changed dramatically by the time he returned and was in turmoil. Increased competition from AMD and Nvidia and major fabs like TSMC encroached on Intel's market lead in areas of competence. However, Intel still had a market lead in architecture design and process technology which is core to Intel’s expertise.
His return in 2021 came with high expectations, given his 30-year tenure at Intel and successful leadership at VMware. However, the semiconductor landscape has dramatically shifted, and Intel's struggles to adapt have become increasingly apparent. The board's decision to change directions prompted Gelsinger's sudden retirement announcement without a clear succession plan, which speaks volumes about the urgency of Intel's situation.
