Harris was not hiding in plain sight, because he was not hiding. Instead he was a monstrous narcissist who used his power and fame to silence his victims
Some television colleagues called him “the octopus” because he sexually assaulted female staff. Rumours were shared with executives. Harris carried on attacking, powered by entitlement. How should we mark such a death? Understandably, those who lauded him have airbrushed him from their histories. Murals were painted over, halls of fame excised, plaques unscrewed,re-edited by the BBC. On his death, he deserves no more than a news in brief. Yet his victims merit more.
Coverage can be indictment not obituary, avoiding the usual florid prose reserved for the demise of public figures. The women and girls attacked by Harris – and other TV entertainers like him – should know that people haven’t forgotten what happened to them, or how they were failed by institutions and witnesses and executives who should have acted, or how a safeguarding culture has transformed life for children growing up today, because victims spoke out.
