Glenn Brown is the latest in a line of visual artists to open a museum of his own. “My works are slightly repulsive, so I want to give people time with them,” the British painter said.
Artists no longer merely dream of seeing their work in museums. The top ones are increasingly opening museums of their own.
In Chicago, Theaster Gates has converted a former bank and other nearby houses into a museum-turned-workshop for his and other artworks. In southern France, Anselm Kiefer recently opened a vast, subterranean exhibit space for his eerie installations. London has Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, and this week, London painter Glenn Brown joined the pack, opening his Brown Collection in a century-old warehouse in the city’s Marylebone neighborhood.
