A Wall Street Journal investigation reveals the DHS secretary's combative relationship with border czar Tom Homan and her attempts to win back Trump's favor.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem speaks during a news conference at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters, Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, in Washington. ” as she and top advisor Corey Lewandowski sought to win back President Donald Trump’s favor following a series of missteps after federal officers fatally shot two U.
S. citizens in Minnesota last month. Noem and Lewandowski have focused on producing “dramatic” social media videos and content showing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arresting people and confronting protestors. But as Trump expressed his displeasure with the proliferation of controversial videos on social media platforms like X, Noem and Lewandowski placed the blame on ICE acting director Todd Lyons. “They demanded that he draw up a new plan for ICE to carry out targeted enforcement, an approach Lyons had been advocating all along, according to ICE officials, but that the pair had previously eschewed,”According to the WSJ, Noem tasked her staff with keeping track of Homan’s media appearances. She would “berate” them if Homan was on TV as she looked to bolster her own media credentials with more screen time. Noem also allegedly asked aides to stage a bigger crowd for her than Homan when they were scheduled to speak at two different events.“The country is disgusted by what the Department of Homeland Security has done,” top House Democratic Reps. Hakeem Jeffries , Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar Sen. Tom Tillis has also been critical of Noem, calling for her to be removed from her role leading DHS.
