People in “trigger law” states — including an OBGYN, a rabbi, and a teenager — discuss their fears, expectations, and plans for a post-Roe America.

A tension has filled the air since a Politico leak revealed in May that the Supreme Court had voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I've terminated pregnancies for concurrent rectal cancer, for history of repeated strokes during pregnancy, for cardiac disease that makes pregnancy highly lethal, for women who have uncontrollable hypertension, and recent kidney transplants. That goes away. Those are not options anymore. It's only to save the life of the mother. It puts all women and doctors who care for pregnant women with complications in a very precarious situation.

I always thought that abortion was wrong. That's what I was raised to believe. At 44, I became a parent much later than I ever expected I would. But one of the things I can tell you is that it 100% changed my attitude about abortion. I realized that parenting, even when you desperately want to do it like I did, it's a very difficult thing. The Jackson Women’s Health Organization in Mississippi is now at the center of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

I do worry that as more people are self-managing their abortions, people will continue to be prosecuted for ending their pregnancies. I worry about the criminalization of patients.Heidi Selzler-Echola worked at the Red River Women’s Clinic, an abortion provider in North Dakota, for six years. She still refers patients there, but said the potential end of Roe would change that.

My biggest fear is the folks who will be forced to stay pregnant. Maternal health is a big piece of why I entered this movement. Kentucky statistics right now show that Black and brown people are three to four times more likely to die than their white counterparts when giving birth, and it’s a real reality.

I’ve seen so many women making these hard choices about what I do to protect my children versus protecting myself. It’s going to make it even harder.Amelia Edelman previously received an abortion in Nashville in 2020 amid both the pandemic and a heartbeat bill introduced by Tennessee’s governor, Bill Lee. She gave birth to a son, pictured next to her, in April 2022.In the summer of 2020, I was in a newish relationship. I had been a single mom for a long time and I found out I was pregnant.

In Judaism, when we're talking about life, we're talking about existing life. We're talking about the life of the mother, of the woman, of the pregnant person. The preservation of human life is my most sacred task. As we move forward into the unknown that lays ahead of us, I am preparing myself.Keaton Anderson was raised in the Mormon Church, but left when he was 24. His upbringing “hugely influences” how he thinks about dating and sex.
