A lifeline for residents
For the residents of Shadsworth with Whitebirk, the Big Local is their beating heart. A community hub, the Big Local does not discriminate, judge or even question why anyone in the local area might need their support, it simply offers it.
During the winter months, the Big Local operates a warm bank for residents to visit if they cannot afford to put their heating on at home or simply wish to socialise with staff or other like-minded people. It has been quite popular since it started in early November, with eight people visiting the warm bank last Friday to help themselves to a free hot drink, mince pie and somewhere warm to sit.
"I'm spending £20 every few days and some I know are spending £50 every other day. It's just ridiculous." Shelli Sagar has been a volunteer at the Big Local since Easter, which she does alongside her full-time job. She started volunteering because she wanted to give back to her local community, but initially didn't know where to start.
"What they say might be nothing, but it helps to talk - I would hate to be lonely." After being contacted by Elaine, Shelli started volunteering at the Big Local in order to fulfil her wishes of giving back and offering a chance to speak with and keep members of the community company. The record of the most amount of lunch bags that staff had to make up was 479 - showing the need for the offering in the area. Not only do they offer this, but as a further testament to the Big Local providing support as and when it crops up, they have also supported parents during days that could be quite expensive.
