The Guardians' Slade Cecconi revealed the emotional tightrope baseball players walk, yet his mature postgame reflection shows why Cleveland values his competitive spirit.

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Slade Cecconi reacts after striking out Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, leaving two runners on base in the fourth inning.CLEVELAND, Ohio — In baseball’s emotional crucible, the line between competitive fire and obvious disrespect toward officials remains razor-thin.

In a week that has seen several hair-trigger ejections throughout Major League Baseball, Guardians pitcher Slade Cecconi found himself walking that tightrope Tuesday night, demonstrating both the intensity that makes him effective and the maturity that makes him valuable. The flash point came in the fifth inning of Cleveland’s 1-0 loss to Cincinnati, when Cecconi believed he had struck out Gavin Lux with two runners on base and the Reds already leading by one run. As detailed on the“There were two guys on ... he’s got two outs and on his fifth pitch to Lux, throws a breaking ball right at the bottom of the strike zone,” Paul Hoynes explained on the podcast. “Bo Naylor does a great job framing it, but Tichenor does not call it. He calls it a ball to take it to 3-2.” Though Lux lined out on the next pitch to end the inning, the damage to Cecconi’s composure was done. “Cecconi’s walking off the mound, giving the home plate umpire the eye. And they’re chirping at each other,” Hoynes described. What makes this story particularly compelling isn’t just the heated exchange but Cecconi’s remarkable self-awareness afterward. Rather than doubling down or remaining silent, the pitcher acknowledged his emotions while expressing respect for the difficult job umpires perform.“I blacked out,” Cecconi admitted postgame. “Just fired up. Intense emotion in the game. Those guys have a really hard job back there and I try to make sure I respect that as much as I can because it’s not easy what they do. I just felt that the pitch was in a really good spot and in a really big spot and I really wanted it, but we’re all good now.” This balance between competitive fire and professional respect highlights the emotional intelligence required at baseball’s highest level. Cecconi’s approach after the game likely went a long way toward mending fences, as the podcast hosts noted. “He said a few things just to cool things out with the umpires because he said he doesn’t like to show umpires up,” Hoynes reported. “He knows they have a tough job, but obviously he was running hot right there coming off the mound.” The incident is particularly frustrating considering Cecconi’s stellar performance was wasted in another Guardians loss. He went five innings, matched his career high with eight strikeouts, walked just one batter and surrendered only one earned run. It was his second strong outing against Cincinnati this season, with 16 strikeouts against just one walk in 10 total innings. What’s clear is that Cleveland has a pitcher who combines competitive fire with emotional intelligence — a rare and valuable combination. While his exchange with Tichenor showed his passion, his postgame comments revealed his professionalism. For a Guardians team struggling offensively , having pitchers who bring both emotion and effectiveness to the mound remains crucial. Cecconi’s fiery presence might be exactly what Cleveland needs, provided he continues to balance that intensity with the respect he showed in the aftermath. The Guardians lose another tough one on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. One nothing. They get shut out by the the Reds and Andrew Abbott. Another tough lefty comes in and.And kind of a sort of a different look. You know, Terry Francona lets Andrew Abbott go out there 90 pitches entering the 9th inning and gets a couple of base runners on base. And Tito doesn’t go out and and and pull the trigger and bring in Emilio Pagan, their closer who had saved.4 consecutive games against the Guardians this season. You know he lets Andrew Abbott go out there and finish off the game and with the tying run at the plate, Carlos Santana sends a drive to left field that falls harmlessly into the glove of Will Benson on the warning track. And the the the Reds come away with A1 nothing win. The the longest losing streak in franchise history against the Reds for the Guardians. Just you know what you take away from Tuesday night’s game after just another you know you just.Tough way to go for the Guardians.1:24Yeah, just another night of no offense, Joe. Another night of frustration, wasting another good start by Slade Sacconi. And this team is spinning its wheels, Joe. And I’m not sure, you know, they’re kind of to me, they’re at a crossroads right here. It’s hard to say that, you know, you know, where are we in the middle of June?1:51But they’re they’re nine games out. They’ve lost 12 of their last twenty-one games, 10 of their last 15 games. So you know they have you when you get nine games out in a division and at this time of the season. You know you you have some serious work to do to get back into the AL Central or to just hang on to one of the wild card spots. So they’re they’re in trouble, Joe. They need some help. They need some, they need some help, offensive help and they need to for the the Reds to get out of town.2:28Yeah, I and take Will Benson with them. I think Benson has has shown this season that he’s he’s got it in his mind to to prove to the Guardians that letting him go was a mistake. What, 474 the batting average right now?2:46Four home runs, eight RBIs. Like we said yesterday, you’ve you’ve pretty much already etched his name in the in the Frank Robinson MVP trophy for the Battle of Ohio. He did it again last night with the the double, the lead-off double, and then came around to score the only run of the game. And like we mentioned, you know, played some good defense, made a couple of nice catches in in the outfield as well. Just and and really it’s only been against the Guardians that that Benson has has been able to to produce at this level. He’s not really hitting all that much or all that often. When he’s playing against other teams, it just seems to he just seems to see red every time he looks across the diamond at the Guardians.3:32Joe, he’s 9 for 19, four, four home runs, 8 RBIs and as you said for a 474 batting average in this in the first five games of this series. And like, yeah, I mean I think Will Benson, it’s safe to say he is the the MVP of.This series and maybe he gets a miniature Ohio Cup to put on his mantelpiece or something like that. I’m not sure, but he’s he’s definitely earned it and it was apropos. I thought that he not only scores, scores the only run of the game, but he makes the last out of the game.4:10Yeah, a 1658 OPS just against the Guardians this year, 22 total bases just against the Guardians. I don’t think he has 22 total bases against every other team combined. So that’s it’s just pretty crazy numbers for Will Benson in this series, but.Benson’s productivity is not just the storyline, it’s the lack of productivity. Like we said against our for the Guardians offense. It’s the fifth time that they’ve been shut out this season. They’ve shut out opponents 8 times. So you know the pitching has been there and then like you mentioned, Slade Sacconi’s.Outing was was really another, you know, solid start on this homestand. They’ve got nothing to show for it really, but but Saccone went five innings again, matched his career high with eight strikeouts, only walked one batter.Only gave up one earned run in two starts against the Reds this year. He’s owned 2/4 earned runs total, one walk, 16 strikeouts in 10 innings. Those are numbers that that should, you know, give you a couple of wins there, but in in both cases the offense has struggled to back.Come up.5:28Yes, Sacconi was on fire last night, Joe. But you know once you retire the 1st 1st 10 batters he faces, six go down on strikeouts. He runs into a little bit of a problem in the 4th, gives up consecutive hits to Lux and de la Cruz.Runners are on 2nd and 3rd. Then he comes back and strikes out the next two guys and you know that was his probably his best moment of the of the night right there.5:58Yeah, and you know, he’s he’s an emotional guy, a fiery guy. And like you said, the early success. I think the numbers are he hasn’t given up a run in the first two innings in any of his five starts. And among pitchers in baseball who have started at least five games, only Paul.Skeens is the only other pitcher right now who hasn’t given up a run in the first two innings in any of his starts. So that’s that’s pretty good company. We saw some emotion from Slade Sacconi last night that that 4th inning situation where you mentioned.Where he got out of the jam and came off the mound, I I think he he he struck out Tyler Stevenson on a called third strike with with runners on base and you know he he sort of screamed and then you know let out a howl and you know that that’s not an unusual thing to see.Did.Sort of get some some guys heads to turn in the Reds dugout, but it was the 5th inning when it appeared that he he didn’t get a couple of calls on pitches that looked like they were in the strike zone and maybe according to the the ABS system they they would have been in the strike zone. Saconi doesn’t get the calls and and.Started to chirp a little bit. We saw him having a conversation with the the home plate umpire on his way off the mountain. I don’t know if it was Todd Tishner or not. It was Tishner. So you know he he and Saconi talking back and forth. Not a surprise that Saconi, even though he was only.7:35Like 85 pitches didn’t go back out for the 6th inning because Stephen Vo probably thought it wouldn’t have gone his way.7:41Yeah, definitely, Joe. He was. He thought he had a Gavin Lock struck out. The two guys on the the Reds had scored the only run of the game. So there’s two on. He’s got two outs. And he’s, you know, he’s got on his fifth pitch to Lux, throws a breaking ball right at the bottom of the strike zone. Bo Naylor does a great job framing it, but Tickner does not call it. He calls it a ball to take it to 3/2.Then Lux lines out on the next pitch to end the inning and Sacconi’s walking off the mound, giving the home plate umpire the eye and they’re chirping at each other. And then I think when we talked to him after the game.He said, you know, afterwards, you know, he he said said a few things just to cool things out with the plate umpire because he said he doesn’t like to show umpires up. He knows they have a tough job, but obviously he was a little, he was running hot right there coming off the mound.8:48Yeah, he wanted to, he wanted to cool things down and and and he said that that probably goes a long way, you know, as far as the umpire is concerned because you want to make nice even if even if you did kind of show them up there a little bit. I mean, everybody noticed it. Everybody noticed that there was. There were words being exchanged. Nobody really know what knows what was being said. But he admitted he was he was pretty fired up and he was pretty upset that he didn’t get those calls. So he said I I blacked out, just fired up intense emotion in the game. Those guys have a really hard job back there and I try to make sure I respect that as much as I can because it’s not easy what they do. I just felt that the pitch was in a really good spot and in a really big spot and I really wanted it, but we’re all good now. So that was Slade Sacconi’s quote about the.The umpiring. Hopefully he did enough there in the in the post game to avoid the question enough and and deflect things to not get fined for for talking about the umpiring. But you know, hey, if that’s the case then maybe we’ll see him hang in the.Hanging the letter from the league on his locker, Austin hedges from a few years ago. So yeah, just interesting exchange. We don’t often see the the starting pitchers talking back and forth with the umpires and it was one example of of of seeing it there.10:16Yeah, we saw, we saw Bybe, Bybe and his start earlier in this series. I think he was chirping at the umpire coming off the coming off the mound. I think there was a there was an incident.10:16Uh, we gotta talk.Yeah, yeah, the only, the only the only difference is the the pitch that Bobby was chirping about. Once he got back to the dugout and saw it on the iPad, he realized it was out of the strike zone and he didn’t have much of a of an argument to to make there and and that was the one where his next pitch got hit for a two run double and he he.10:45He lost the chance at at A at a win in the series. So yeah, we’ve got to talk about Jose Ramirez extending his hitting streak or his on base streak to third. Well, he actually has a hitting streak too. His his on base streak is now at 36 games. It’s the what, the longest in the American League.11:05This year, second longest in in the majors behind Kyle Schwarber. He’s hit in ten straight after his 21 game streak was was broken. So he’s got hits in 31 of his last 32 games, a 388 batting average during that.Stretch and he made us made us wait on the edge of our seats until the the 9th inning. What were two outs in the 9th inning and we’re or one out in the 9th inning and we’re you know, two outs. Yeah, it was down to two outs.11:41And he lined a single back up the middle off of Andrew Abbott. Just, you know, getting it done. I thought earlier maybe he was going to get one on a nice diving catch in right field by Jake Fraley, but he he managed to get on base. Just, you know, what? What have you seen out of Jose?Just over this last 32 games where he’s or 36 games where he’s managed to get on base every time.12:05Joey has never changed. He’s the same guy every day. He’s having fun. Just in, you know, the Guardians appreciate him. I just talking to all the coaches. They they say his adaptability from at bat to at bat, from pitch to pitch is is the thing that separates him, Joe. He can, he can hit curve balls, he can hit fast balls, he can hit, you know, sliders and fork balls. You know, you throw it to him, he’s going to hit it. And really that was such that was a clutch performance. You could tell he was kind of relieved when he got to first base because Jake Fraley, that was highway robbery when he stole that, you know, that what had to be probably a triple with that. Yeah, into the right field corner to start the 7th inning. So, you know.13:00He deserved. I think Jose you kind of kind of built up enough equity to get that that single in the ninth. He deserved that one.13:06Yeah, you’re looking at, you know, just an outstanding catch. Sports Center top ten sort of highlight from Jake Fraley. He went full extension, caught it as he slides onto the warning track. If that ball gets by him and and hits up against the wall, Jose Ramirez is is definitely on third base. And and and probably scoring the the tying run of the game at some point in that inning. So yeah, how difficult is it for somebody to to see that result, to get that result in a in a plate appearance and then you know sort of stick with it and and still get on base, you know? It’s pretty deflating to see that kind of a catch and to not have it carry over into your next couple of at bats. It’s got to be a tough thing.13:54Yeah, Joe, I think that’s that’s part of what makes Ramirez Ramirez turn the page. What happened in the last at bat is over. You can’t change it. Focus on the the at bat at hand, get a good pitch and try to hit it hard somewhere.14:11It’s like like in Ted Lasso, you got to be a goldfish, right? The, you know, the short memory. Let’s look at this afternoon. The Guardians, like we said, are another left-hander on the mound for the Reds. The Guardians throw their own lefty out there. I mean Logan Allen, the guard, you know the Reds counter with Nick Lodolo. Final, final game, final chance to take one from the Reds and and Terry Francona and.You know, send them out of there on a down note. What’s the what are you looking for out of Logan Allen and the Guardians this afternoon?14:51Yeah, Logan Allen, just back in the rotation after a short stay in the bullpen, picked up a win there. He he started. His last start was against Houston, went six innings, gave up.Four runs, but he’s back in the rotation. This is will be a second start since being reinserted in the rotation. I thought he pitched OK against Houston. Joe gave up the home run, what, in the 6th inning? Or no, yeah, I think it was the 6th.15:27And but you know, it’ll be interesting to see how he pitches. You know, he’s got a, you know, it’d be nice to, you know, just kind of tap the brakes on this losing streak or this losing streak to the Reds and get the Guardians pointed in the right direction as they head off into this, this long West Coast.Swing.15:47Yeah, it’s you want a happy flight when you’re when you’re packing up and leaving and heading to the West Coast. They open a what, nine game trip on Friday in Seattle. We’ll preview that, you know, coming up in the next couple of days. But first one more against Terry Francona.Hey, what’d you think of Mike Barnett was was on site. The whole gang was back together yesterday. It’s great to see Barney talking to the talking to the clubbies and and and Tito and I saw Tom Hamilton join in the conversation. It was just a really nice little reunion there.Behind the batting cage prior to yesterday’s game.16:30Joe, that’s that’s old home. That’s old home school week. I mean Francona, you know, Mike Napoli’s on that staff. Brad Mills is on that staff. Even Colin Cowgill, you know, who, you know, was a starting, was a starting right fielder on opening.16:50Day for for the for the Indians way back when. I can’t remember exactly what year, but there’s a lot of, there’s a lot of, yeah, maybe 23rd. OK, that’s there’s a lot of Cleveland roots on that team. But Millsy, Napoli, Francona.17:06And and Barney, now that’s a that’s that’s quite a combination right there. Those are, those are some guys you want to hang out with.17:13Yeah, I went over and, you know, just said hi to Barney as we were standing on the warning track there for a little bit. And you know, I told him, you know, you’re here, you run the risk of, you know, leaving the park with an unexpected haircut. Because, you know, how many times have we seen Mike Barnett walking in and out of the clubhouse with a shaved head?17:33After Tito took a chunk out of his his scalp with the, you know, with the Clippers, it seemed like anytime the Guardians needed some sort of, you know, needed some sort of levity injected into things. It was usually on a flight. Tito would sneak up behind Barney.Get him with the Clippers and take a chunk out of his hair. And I I do remember the one time we were in Kansas City and and and Barney said that he had, he had begged Tito, you know, hey, I’m going to visit my mother. Could you please not, you know, cut my hair for it? It was, it was, you know, really funny exchange.Maybe the Guardians need need Steven Vogt to grab the Clippers and go, go shave somebody’s head, get them, you know, shake them out of their funk, shake them out of their their little slump here as as we as they go forward. But Halsey, that’s going to wrap up today’s edition of the Cleveland Baseball Talk podcast. We will check back in with you following this afternoon’s game and off day on Thursday before everybody heads West.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
