The enclosure was designed with the animals natural habitat in mind

Once a common sight in the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, the Barbary Lions are extinct in the wild.

Aged in their 20s, these Barbary Lions are some of the oldest in captivity in Europe and their new home means visitors to the zoo can get an up close view of the animals thanks to 14 new head to toe viewing windows offering a never before seen glance at the pride."We are really excited about Kingdom of the Barbary Lions," Belfast Zoo's General Manager Alyn Cairns told Belfast Live.

"Our lions are now in their 20s so they are old age pensioners, but we have taken that into account and given them twice as much space as before alongside everything from air conditioning to central heating and cameras." One of the more important aspects of this exhibit is Belfast Zoo's links with lions in the wild and they have recently partnered with panthrea.org who are working to save cats in the wild.
