Monroe County's new 'Stop the Stigma' campaign aims to end the stigma surrounding addiction.

Rochester , N.Y. - Monroe County 's new "Stop the Stigma" campaign aims to end the stigma surrounding addiction. A street outreach team was in downtown Rochester on Friday to spread the word that help is available to those who need it.

targets areas most in need of addiction services. "A lot of folks will tell us that the alley behind us is called 'Overdose Alley'," explained Deborah Leach, the addiction services outreach supervisor for Monroe County. Leach says that the alley on Lyell Avenue is littered with remnants of drug use, including empty boxes of Narcan, a medicine used to treat opioid overdoses. "We get data from 911 and EMS. 'Where are substances being sold? Where does the community need us the most?' That’s where we set up and that’s where we target," said Leach. "We come out here every Friday. We are on Lyell Avenue, and we spend most of the day here. We give out Narcan kits, fentanyl test strips, xylazine test strips, alcohol prep pads, and gauze." Leach often addresses people on the street as "friend" and shares that several members of the Impact Team are in recovery themselves. "We can truly understand what they’ve gone through. We can share what’s worked for us," she said. "We want people to know that there is support available to them, that we’re here to talk to them, to love on them, and give them what they need."in Monroe County, one of which is at Flash Hair Designs on Genesee Street. "Almost all of my clients have Narcan. I give them at least one for their car, one for their home," said owner Ithmar Robinson. "I want everyone to have Narcan. I’ve heard lots of stories of people just running up to people on the corner and they get the Narcan out of their car." If you or someone you know is in need of addiction services, including Narcan, call Monroe County's 24/7 hotline at 753-5300.
