This was always going to be a historic week in Westminster. Although it may now seem a lot longer, it is only five days sinceOn Tuesday, both the outgoing prime minister and his successor flew to Balmoral for the formal handover of power, the Queen’s final public duty and the 15th time she carried out the role ofMs Truss spent weeks preparing for that moment.
By the end of August, as estimates for the future path of energy prices continued to rise, that changed. Ms Truss began holding regular meetings with Kwasi Kwarteng and Jacob Rees-Mogg, designated as the new Chancellor and Business Secretary, to plan the largest Government intervention in the economy for decades.

– but allies insist it merely shows he will be a pragmatist rather than an ideologue. “Ignore what the profiles say about him and look at what he’s actually done in office,” one said – pointing out that he has been a key figure in enforcing the energy price cap and pushing oil and gas producers to go further.
