The story has inspired an Oscar-winning film and a Tony-winning musical. But Bill Condon’s transporting new take is wholly original—and far more romantic.
Lopez had been itching to work on a traditional movie musical, and immediately signed on when Condon brought her Kiss of the Spider Woman. It’s no surprise she showed up raring to go. But this is no ordinary musical. In fact, “It’s trying to do something different from anything you’ve seen,” Condon tells me. “This feels like a unicorn movie to me. It’s very hard to actually distill and describe.
“I spent 24 hours just locked up in a room going over and over and over and over until I was able to get a take that I finally wasn’t repulsed by,” they say. Tonatiuh was flown out to New York but got rejected for the role initially, told they seemed too young. They tried to forget about it. They moved apartments. Then Condon reached out a few weeks later and asked Tonatiuh to come back for a final table read with Luna. They were cast shortly thereafter.
