Colt Emerson was warming up with the Tacoma Rainiers when he was summoned by the Seattle Mariners.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - MAY 17: Colt Emerson #4 of the Seattle Mariners heads to the dug out during the eighth inning against the San Diego Padres at T-Mobile Park on May 17, 2026 in Seattle, Washington.

On Sunday afternoon, Colt Emerson was warming up with the Tacoma Rainiers for their matchup with Sugar Land at Cheney Stadium when Manager John Russell called him into his office.

"This is actually happening, didn't feel real," Emerson recalls of his emotions in that moment. There's just one thing, first pitch with the Mariners and San Diego Padres was just two-and-a-half hours away in Seattle. Whether he kept the speedometer under 60 or not is a question lost to the annals of time, or maybe some kind of computer chip in Colt's car.

"It was very surreal, you dream about stuff like that, calling your parents and telling them you made it to the bigs and it finally came," Emerson said. "It came on my way up to Seattle in the car, so I wouldn't want it any other way, special day for me, I'll remember this forever, very grateful for this day.

" Emerson was greeted with a rousing ovation from fans when he took to the batter's box for the first time in the third inning. Something that, even at just 20 years old, he understood only happens once.

"At the end of the day, this is a very special day for me, special day for my family, everyone who's been along with me. I really wanted to soak it in as much as possible and really take it in, and this is the first of many days.

" Emerson was called up with such haste because Mariners third baseman Brendan Donovan was placed on the 10-day IL again. The Mariners turned to Colt Emerson because they believe he's ready to play every day.

In what feels like it will eventually be a footnote in a bright career , Colt was 0-2 with a walk and a run scored, not bad for the rush and bustle of his debut day. Colt said that the rushing up to Seattle "didn't give him time to think" and perhaps helped keep the moment in check.

He said that Monday will be even more memorable when his family and girlfriend are in the crowd when the M's host the White Sox at 6:40 p.m. They were already on a flight by the time Emerson addressed the media after Sunday's loss to San Diego. The Mariners #1 prospect and the #6 prospect in all of baseball isn't getting a call-up to fill a gap for a couple days or weeks.

"He's ready," said Mariners General Manager Justin Hollander. "This is not a 15-at-bat or 20 at-bat tryout to see if he's capable of taking the job and running with it for the rest of the year. I have zero concerns that he's emotionally ready to handle it, that he's mature enough to handle the day-to-day of Major League life. He certainly has the tools and skills to go compete at this level.

You never really know with a young player until they get out there and show us what they can do, but we do have all the confidence in the world that he can go take the job and run with it, and if that's how it works, that would be great," Hollander added. Emerson will start at third base and perhaps spell J.P. Crawford at shortstop when he needs an off-day.

The point here is that even when Donovan returns, they'll use Donovan's versatility to be able to keep him and Colt in the lineup at the same time.

"They brought me up to help the team win, it's not about me, it's about the team, and anything I can do," Emerson said.
