After the fall of the Assad regime, Syrians have flocked to the former Syrian President's abandoned villa, looting its contents and turning it into a public space. The once-exclusive property, boasting a private beach, sprawling gardens, and luxurious amenities, now stands as a stark reminder of the regime's opulence while its people lived in poverty.
A fighter with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the group that led the overthrow of the Assad regime, stands on the terrace of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's family villa outside Latakia. After the Assad regime fell last month, the family's properties were left abandoned. One of those was the Assad summer home, with a private beach on the Mediterranean.
"See our land with all these olives, we could never enter it before, but now we're here," Sary told NPR. It's easy to get lost in the villa amid countless walk-in closets, ensuite bathrooms with modern showers, and bedroom after bedroom. The primary bathroom has a large Jacuzzi bathtub that overlooks the Mediterranean, fit for a bubble bath with a sunset view. The toilet, shower and mirror are all smashed in. The huge kitchen has a bar, large sinks and countertops fit for a professional chef."The palace of the serial killer, Bashar al-Assad," it reads in Arabic.
