Inspired by insects, researchers have crafted a lens-free compound eye with motion tracking and an expansive field of vision.
The system captures panoramic images with a 140° field of view, expanding to 220° in binocular setup, offering unparalleled visual coverage.Drawing inspiration from insects’ compound eyes, researchers have created a lens-free compound eye with motion-tracking capabilities and an incredibly wide field of vision.
This has sparked much research into artificial compound eyes, most made by transferring a microlens array to curved substrates and combining it with commercial planar image sensors. In this study, the team developed a pinhole compound vision system for wide-range imaging and accurate target positioning. Two features made this possible.
