NSW Rugby bosses have revealed the reasons behind their historic decision to give ownership of the Waratahs to Rugby Australia. And they believe other states should follow their lead.
NSW Rugby bosses say a historic decision to enter into a “shared governance” model with Rugby Australia, in which the Waratahs will be owned by the governing body, was to show leadership and take the first step in making bold and necessary changes in Australian rugby.t with RA under head office’s push for a new centralised governance model, in which RA is negotiating with state unions to, at least, take control of all high-performance systems and structures.
“Being administered by one entity, as opposed to the six at the moment, will give better outcomes, whether that’s high-performance outcomes or commercial outcomes. Thinking around reducing duplication or making smarter decisions around where the money goes, and also ring-fencing community rugby, is going to give us a better way to support the game.
”And the Waratahs’ fundamental business gets to focus on everything from the pathways, to the professionalisation of the women’s team through to the men’s program, all the way through to national programs. It actually provides, I think, greater clarity.” “Delivery of the strategy is all done through the stadiums themselves. And that is really important, they have their own stakeholders, they understand the nuances of their venue and their location.
