Coronavirus: Inmates could be freed to ease virus pressure on jails
Mr Buckland's appearance before the committee came as all visits to prisons were cancelled, as part of measures to curb the spread of the virus.
The Ministry of Justice said 55 prisons across England and Wales would be given 900 phones to allow prisoners to stay in touch with family members during the ban. The justice committee also heard from Jo Farrar, chief executive of the Prison and Probation Service, who said 13 inmates had tested positive for coronavirus.According to the latest Department of Health figures,
