Luis Miguel Cristobal, a convicted felon at the Utah County Jail, is accused of attempting to incite a riot by assaulting deputies and encouraging other inmates to join him.

A convicted felon being held at the Utah County Jail is accused of attempting to provoke a riot, assaulting two deputies in the process and calling on other inmates to join him. Authorities said the incident began on Friday, Jan. 10, when an on-duty deputy heard a loud commotion from the intake housing unit in dorm 3, followed by a deputy’s call for help.

The deputy quickly responded and found 35-year-old inmate Luis Miguel Cristobal behind the deputy station’s 'red zone,' scratching the face and neck of the deputy who had called for assistance. The responding deputy called for backup and witnessed Cristobal retreat from the red zone, swinging a radio he had taken from the injured deputy by its microphone cord. Cristobal yelled, 'Let’s start a revolution!' and 'Come on, guys, get out here!' in what authorities said “was his attempt to start a riot.”Utah inmate's death being investigated as possible homicide After calling for more help, the deputy ordered Cristobal to the ground, but he refused. The deputy then ordered other inmates in dorm No. 3 to close their doors. Court documents state that Cristobal then charged into dorm No. 2, urging inmates there to 'Start a revolution' and 'Rise up!' He continued to dorms 4, 5, 6, and 7, pulling open cell doors and encouraging inmates to 'Revolt.' Cristobal was chased by deputies into another unit of the jail, where he paused near the shower area and raised his fists. When deputies approached, one attempted a double-leg takedown, but Cristobal punched them in the chest and then in the face
