the the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the security guard as Darrell Holderman, 78. Holderman reportedly was employed by Merchants Security, a company hired by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.Police say the shooting occurred at about 9:45 a.m. at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Booth was able to overpower Holderman and take his gun, police say. He shot Holderman and ran from the emergency room into the parking lot, where he then took his own life, according to police.
Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck said during a news conference Wednesday that Booth had been brought to the hospital at about 1 a.m. Wednesday after he became ill, possibly from drug withdrawal,. He was being held in jail on a probation violation in connection with a 2015 burglary, reports say. “There is nothing in this individual’s past that led anyone to believe that such a horrific incident would occur,” Streck said, according to WDTN. “We do send deputies with inmates who are considered high risks through our evaluations, but nothing would’ve predicted today’s events.”
WDTN reports the sheriff’s office is planning to investigate why Booth was not placed back in handcuffs and shackles after his medical evaluation. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
