Body-worn camera video from December 9, 2024, captured the brutal attack on inmate Robert Brooks by state prison guards at Marcy Correctional Facility one day before his death. The video, released by the New York State Attorney General's Office, shows Brooks, 43, of Rochester, being beaten for nearly 10 minutes while handcuffed on a medical examination table.
An autopsy determined that Brooks' death was a homicide caused by compression of the neck and blunt force trauma injuries to the rest of his body, consistent with the video evidence. Brooks' family attorney, Stephen Schwarz, stated that more than a dozen correctional officers and two nurses have been suspended without pay, while one officer resigned in the wake of the incident. Schwarz emphasized that this case highlights the need to address the issue of physical and emotional abuse within correctional facilities, noting that video evidence like this can be crucial in proving such allegations. Two lawsuits have been filed: one in federal court against the officers and supervisors involved, and another against the state of New York. Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for felony assault after stabbing his then-girlfriend. He had been transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy halfway through his sentence. Schwarz stated that the process of serving all those involved is underway, and a grand jury is expected to hear evidence in the case.
