As the race for Bexar County sheriff winds down, inmate deaths in the overcrowded Bexar County jail is emerging as one of the most urgent problems the county’s top law enforcement officer will need to tackle in the next four years. The latest death came on Oct. 10 when a jailer found Roxanne Otero , 48, unresponsive in her cell and started life-saving measures. Emergency medical technicians later pronounced her dead. She was the 11th inmate to die this year in the jail.
As County Precinct 3 gets less red, Democrat seeks to unseat Republican Moody Salazar, 53, became the first sheriff to be re-elected since 2004 when he beat Republican Gerard Rickhoff with 61 percent of the vote in 2020. Salazar has also spent four times more money in his campaign than Buchanan — $34,000 to Buchanan's $7,500 from July through September.

'He's not really being held accountable for all the stuff that's going on,' Buchanan said. 'If you're not reporting it, you're covering it up for him. I think the public needs to know about this stuff.
